Jacketed .357 bullets and TrailBoss

#1 Post by ovenpaa »

I usually load with 158 grain RNFP bullets however we seem to be down to out last 100 or so. Whilst hunting around on the shelves I found a few boxes if 158 grain RN and RNFP Jacketed bullets so I thought I would give them a try (Not competitions) My usual load is around 4.5 grains of TrailBoss.

Is anyone here shooting .357Mag jacketed with TB? It is an 1894C Remlin.

Yep. Just start off with a 100% load and work down Davie.
Or stick 19gr of h110 under them.....

measure were the bullet will seat in the cartridge this will be your 100% load, 70% of that is your start point and work up from there do not compress trailboss

We reload quite a bit with TrailBoss, it gives good accuracy in both .357 rifles we shoot plus it is the 'Go to' powder for Subs as far as I am concerned. I will run a few test loads, I also have a tub of Lil'Gun I will give a try.

A 100% load is NOT compressed. And as there is a higher chance of a sqib load with jacketed, thats why you work down if needed.

So, what was wrong with my original reply ?

If you are concerned about using jacketed, you can always lube them for less friction. I found a Finnish website which had numerous reduced loads for fmj, all lubed with various things such as animal fat! Not sure why they were using fmj, possibly a shortage of cast...

Trail Boss was designed for use in large cases, low pressure with lead bullets. It is not for high pressure, jacketed loads. It will probably work, safely, but you'll be obtaining neither the efficiency nor potential of cartridge/bullet/rifle. It's just an inappropriate choice really. (Unless you have 10 pounds of it and no other way of getting any other powders!!)
In 1978 I was told by my grand dad that the secret to rifle accuracy is, a quality bullet, fired down a quality barrel..... How has that changed?

Guns dont kill people. Dads with pretty Daughters do...!
