Scoping my P14, but I know nothing about scopes

Hi, all.
I'm really interested in scoping my classic P14, (boo, hiss, etc.). However, I want to use a "no-gunsmithing" mount so as not to ruin or alter the rifle itself.
I want to get one o' these:

However, this leads me to a problem: I know nothing about scopes. I don't even know what mounts I need to buy to fit onto this thing.
Any advice for a scope-layman would be most appreciative.
Kind regards,
Tower

As an alternative this works well:

Look for some Hilver steel rings as they are nicely rounded off and more in keeping with the rifle and stick a reasonable Hawke on top and you are good to go. Alternatively look for a second hand Pecar 10x for even more of a period look.

Thank you kindly, Ovenpaa.
So, if one get a Picatinny rail system, will any scope rings fit on it? This might be unrealistic but I'm not looking to spend "that" much; I mainly want something to train with. I'm not a scope shooter and I want something to get me started.

Any rings designed for a Picatinny will fit a Picatinny rail. Do make sure the rings are for the same diameter tube as the 'scope :)

I am a relative new comer to scopes my self. Its only recently I have acquired modern rifles (modern to me any way) requiring scopes. Most of my shooting has been done with milsurps. What I have learnt is you get what you pay for with scopes. I toyed with none gun smith mounts on some of mine. In my opinion you are better off buying a cheap .308 that is all ready fitted with a rail and bunging a cheap second hand scope on it and leave the P14 as it is.

I have found the non gunsmith P14 mounts easy enough to fit and they work. The P14 is a superb rifle and can be very accurate so I would say crack on, what have you got to loose?

Agree. I know how my P14 shoots, and from what I read the Insta-Mounts are good.
Do you think I'd need quite high mounts for a scope, or as the rear-sight base on the P14 is quite high anyway, would I need a low mount?

That is a difficult question to answer as it depends on the size of the 'scope objective however as the rail sits quite high you probably can get away with low mounts for most 'scopes. This is where Amazon.co.uk is your friend, you can pick up a set of low aluminium rings for under a fiver delivered to test with.

My dad had a great non gunsmith mount made for his No 4 and it works, not sure if the guy (who's name I can't remember) would make a P14 one though. Do what feels good as my dad's works and he get's good results.
