I'm fancying reloading some .410 brass and was wondering if I could buy the primers and powder with just a section 2 cert? (section 1 pending at the mo)

The cases I wil be aquiring take a large pistol primer and not a shotgun cartridge one I believe.

Any info welcome

Ok, so this is where the confusion starts for me

I have been led to believe by people who reload and have section 1 etc that none of the reloading items eg: primers, powder, bullets are listed on the certificate and "licence" is given to sell them these items by the RFD because they have listed on their cert the calibres which they are buying for if that makes sense.

Example: Mr Smith has 7.62 rifle listed as a firearm on his cert and can take cert to RFD and buy powder, primers etc because he's been granted that calibre of ammunition by plod so deemed he has access anyway.

Example 2 which is me: Mr Gazza has section 2 SGC with .410 shotgun listed on it and fancies doing a bit of reloading so needs the items above to reload the .410 brass.

Why is it OK for Mr Smith and not me?

Don't see why not - and it will depend on the MAKE of the powder.

Quite a lot of "pistol" powders are actually shotgun powders, they just happen to have been taken into common use for pistol reloading...Red Dot, Blue Dot, etc.

The primary legislation on primers, the VCRA, specifically excludes primers for shotgun cartridges as exempt from VCRA restrictions: it mentions these primers in vague categorisation only: it does NOT state "ONLY 209 type primers are exempt".

AN RFD that has not got his head wedged between his buttocks, can read English AND understand what is written should not be a problem....esp. if you take in the brass .410 cases to back up what you are doing.

It is up to the Dealer, my Dealer says they can be given away for nothing quite legally and say charge £40 for car parking instead.

Believe me, this guy knows the law, he has to, to protect a million pound shooting ground.

You can in theory purchase powder without an FAC and primers can be purchased on an SGC for reloading shot shells, even if you are like me and use LR primers in a .410

The Magtech brass I'll be getting uses large pistol primers and not shotty primers so I can maybe see issues here but then again maybe not!
In theory you can also buy shotgun cartridges over the counter without needing a certificate but I've never managed it so far so it could go either way

I've bought powder several times from different dealers and never been asked for my FAC. Every time I've bought primers however they have asked to see it.

I have never been asked for a fire arm certificate when purchasing powder.
I have been asked to see a valid firearm certificate when purchasing primers but I think its just Registered fire arms dealers being cautious I don't think its a legal requirement to purchase primers.
I have thousands of primers both large and small I can not remember the last time I bought any. The club I belong to buys powder in bulk through our friendly fire arms dealer and we share the cost. If I buy primers I usually purchase 5000.
