I'm interested to know if a gunsmith could turn this blank firing sten gun into a .22lr obviously legally with a barrel change and modified bolt ect what do you guys think?

I have looked at the Sten and Stirling in the past with a view to building one in .22lr one day and my view is it can certainly be done however it would need a new sub receiver, barrel, magazine internals, bolt and trigger, certainly not an evenings work :)

It would make more sense as a scratch build - it's only a few tubes after all... The proportions would be a little weird given that you need 12" of barrel forward of the magazine.

Would be cool though :)

Isn't there a problem with open bolt and potential for burst fire as well?

I always liked the idea of using a GSG MP40s trigger and bolt in a sten body with a faux suppressor to make it look like either a MK.II(S) or a Mk.6

Loyalist paramilitaries were able to turn out sub machine guns of superior quality. In 1988 an ex soldier was found in possession of over 1000 Uzi and a number of Sterling type submachine guns that had been made in a small engineering setting in Ballynahinch.

I fired one of the "Uzi". They were brilliant. Allegedly the lead scientist at WERC sent a copy to IMI to show them what could be done with their design and quality manufacturing!

Question Sim, do you think the open bolt nature of a Sten makes it a poor candidate for a 22lr semi without work done? I only ask as no one seems to be asking the question on ease of conversion to full auto?

Realistically the only way anyone will make a 22lr semi is a conventional straight blowback a là 10/22 or any one of the GSG lookylikeys.
