I am for ever having to bore sight in rifles prior to zeroing them and have become quite a dab hand at the process however things get award when it comes to semi auto rim fires so invested in a Laser Bore Sight kit from that well known auction site. Now it was quite a risk given the huge investment, OK it was under a tenner delivered. Anyway it arrived last week and I had a chance to test it on a couple of semi autos before heading down the range. We have a target attached to a door (Always locked) in the workshop so I can zero at 10m and keen to try with a rifle with a known zero I bunged the supplied batteries into the device, fitted the little plastic taper thingy to the end, turned it on and pointed it at the target.

Good news, I could see the laser dot in bright light so I settled down with a chair as a suitable rest and sighted up on the target. Amazing, it was nigh on perfect for windage and a tad low. Putting this down to luck I rotated the device and incredibly the dot stayed in the same place. To say I was impressed is an understatement. I checked with another rifle, same result.

I hauled another rimfire out, attached a 'scope and it was 6-7 inches high right so I adjusted the turrets down to the same point as the last two had pointed and voila, one sighted in S/A and all in under a minute. All I can say is if you are swapping glass on little rifles they are well worth a look.

I bought one of the cheap cartridge shaped ones from the same auction site and it was cr*p....
Slipped it in the chamber and all i got out of the barrel was a mass of reflections.
I put the boresighter in a V-block pointing at a wall 2 ft away, then rolled the boresighter... the laser drew a nice 1 inch circle..!!

Handy as a quick check before heading to the range. At 10 yards my .223 would point 4.9inches above the aiming mark when set for 1000 yards.

They are useful, but unfortunately the .22 insert - which is the one I use most - self destructed, so the unit is now taking up space in the 'bits box'.

Les, could you sleeve the thinner section with layers of heat shrinl tubing to bring it up to size?

Given its apparent success at accurately indicating on a .22 I am going to test it with some centrefire rifles with known zeroes. If it continues to give reasonable results I will mark the zero point and put a series of lines on a new target at known intervals for zeroing. The original purchase was really a bit of fun and I am very impressed with the results, I do wonder if some carefully sized soft metal bushings in place of the plastic things would give even better results.

Can you name the particular seller or PM a link to them? I see several on there but you never know who to buy off so if you've had a good experience then that's a useful starting place.

Tried one on the Bisley Zero range & struggled to see the red 'dot' (thumb sized smudge) so i guess not a very good laser diode but indoors ok & as Ovenpaa says works well.

I too bore sight first & would value a little bore sight mirror that you can put in the breach & see down without taking the butt plate etc out.

I did try that, plus a few other things, but I could never really be sure of the results afterwards. I ended up buying a Nikko Stirling scope alignment device/bore collimator. Similar to this:-

It's not perfect, but it usually gets me on the target.
