Evening,

My dog club has been asking me tonight regarding starting pistols and the law, and as I'm the person into firearms, I get asked.

As far as I'm aware, we don't need a license to hold one, just need to inform plod that we will be using it in a public place, anyone able to confirm/deny that?

If deny, could you explain the ins and outs should you know?

It's for training GSD for their breed surveys which we do at 1 year olds, shows their steadiness and nerveyness etc.

Read this and see if makes any sense!

https://www.gov.uk/government/uploads/s ... 15_v16.pdf

It seems to depend on if the pistol being used is readily convertible or not - it also only mentions their use in athletics events

Seems a little confusing, it isn't very clear. Mentions Sec 5 a couple of times aswell. But as far as I understand, if the barrel is a closed barrel, they should have no problem.

Think a call to the FEO might be in order.

There are specifically made starting pistols for the training of gun dogs to comply with the rules. Generally they don't vent from the front, have an obstructed barrel and have a large percentage of them painted in a prominent "non-gun" colour. My local shop had some blank firing "Glocks" with bright blue or orange slides.

As above. Any of the orange ones from these sites can be bought without any kind of checks;

If you want a black one you'll either have to take up AmDram or run around the woods blatting kids with BB's 8-) lol
