Reloading the .410

I now have some CBC .410 brass and I am keen to give it a try however I do need some load data, so is anyone on the forum loading for the 2.5" 410 and can suggest some starter loads. I would prefer Vihtavuori powder as it is easily sourced, other than that I have an open mind.

I kept it simple and just used Hodgdon Lil'Gun - 12gn IIRC.

I assume that is a 1/2oz load, cardboard or plastic wads?

I checked my notes and it was actually 13gns of Lil'Gun with plastic wads. I used it for pretty much everything - 1/2oz of shot, multi ball and slug.

Time for more probably dim questions however I not loaded a 410 before so would like to keep things on the safe side.

I am not sure of what diameter and thickness wads to use, these are brass cases and I would prefer to keep things friendly for the environment so no plastic wadding (Lets ignore the half ounce of lead!) The bore of a .410 is, erm .410" and the bore of the brass I have is around .438" so I need an over powder wad of at least .438" - Should I be looking at something like .440" Then I need a cushion wad and I was thinking of cork or fibre and I have oversized examples of both here so I can make a punch to suit. The wad stack will be around .700" based on how much volume the shot and powder takes up. Should I be sizing the wad at .440" again? I do have some lubricated 10 bore BP wads, are they worth considering if they were sized suitably?

I am thinking of using Alliant 2400 because someone has pointed out I have a tub of the stuff here and there seems to be an accepted 2400 load of 13 grains behind 1/2 oz of shot so this is something I can work up to, maybe start at 10 grains and see how things go.

Thoughts anyone?

Many thanks for the link however I am still not sure about the size of wads to use.
