I don't pretend to be any sort of "precision" engineer but that makes me wince. :(

They art actually cutting threads on the barrel, juse cutting an edge so the die can start threading more easily (much like if I want to cut my threads on a rod, I'd file a small chamfer on it first
Re: Cutting threads with a drill is this right or wrong?
It's more than just a chamfer - they are 'turning' down the barrel to the major diameter of the thread, prior to threading with a hand die. The full video would have another 15 mins of butchery with that horrible tool before they could start cutting the thread.poll007 wrote:They art actually cutting threads on the barrel, juse cutting an edge so the die can start threading more easily (much like if I want to cut my threads on a rod, I'd file a small chamfer on it first

Correct me if wrong but wouldn't the major diameter be .625 for the threading, which from what i can recall is actually larger than the diameter of a mosin muzzle (I'm sure I've seen a finish mosin at one point get cut 5/8x24 without turning first)rox wrote:It's more than just a chamfer - they are 'turning' down the barrel to the major diameter of the thread, prior to threading with a hand die. I don't know the dimensions of that particular barrel, but it looks like he's doing this:poll007 wrote:Correct me if wrong but wouldn't the major diameter be .625 for the threading, which from what i can recall is actually larger than the diameter of a mosin muzzle (I'm sure I've seen a finish mosin at one point get cut 5/8x24 without turning first)rox wrote:It's more than just a chamfer - they are 'turning' down the barrel to the major diameter of the thread, prior to threading with a hand die. you certainly seem to be right (i must of seen it done on a different sized barrel, not unusual as there's several variants for the mosin)
at least they seem to have secured it better than in the video link you posted
