Dum Dum Bullets

.

I never knew that the Dum Dum was named after a place where the bullets were made.

I was reading about the Indian mutiny from the 1800's and although I knew
the reason behind the mutiny (the issue of a new cartridge that was coated in animal fat),
I did not know that the place of Dum Dum in India was where the British army moved it's
Ordnance Factory to and that was when the use of animal fats went from a rumor to
a fact and that was the straw that broke the camels back and partially the cause of the
Indian Mutiny in the 1850's.

Funny how common words are used and no real thought of their origins are given.

Animal fats were not used. The cartridges were dipped in beeswax. The animal fat story was revolutionary propaganda.
