Want to fit a scope to my Marlin 1894 (.357) lever.
Looking for 3-9x50 (or 40) non illuminated. Would like to keep cost below £200.

Any recommendations or what not to get......

60 quid more will see you get a Leupold VX1 2-7x33. I have one of these on one of my .357s. Don't be put off by the size of the objective, good glass will give far better light transmission than mediocre glass with a bigger lens. And because of the smaller objectives decent cheek weld and head position can be had, which is compromised with bigger objectives as the stock is designed for the iron sights. Lower the better. Finally, times 7 magnification is more than good enough to take a .357 carbine out to the limit of its envelope, I comfortably shoot mine to 300, but the lower 2 power is really very fast considering and is really useful for the action gallery events such as Bianchi.

And as a Leupold "gold ring" scope, they have a lifetime guarantee...

I've used a Simmons Whitetail 1.5-5x20 from 25m to 300m and have been happy with it, only cost me £75 on eBay. One thing you need to consider is parallax distance. I've used some scopes which have a set parallax of 75 yards or 50m so you'll have a hard time focussing down to 25m. If you're shooting at 25m then you should either keep your magnification low or consider an adjustable objective scope.
