Another squeeze on our sport.............

TNT have apparently more than doubled their charges for transporting firearms..................so now up to £120 on top of everything else when having a rifle re-barrelled or moved between RFD's. They obviously don't want the business...............

Does anyone know if I'm right in assuming that if I have a rifle re-barrelled by a local smith, I can take it up to the proof house myself?

I could be wrong but I think if you have it rebarreled and don't sell it you don't need to get it proofed.

True, sort of, but to go from the RFD doing the work back to the FAC holder it will need to be in Proof

Royal Mail still allow posting of sporting guns - but obviously NOT to another FAC holder directly, MUST go to an RFD

Picked up a rifle that we have had some work done to it this morning, asked about their RFD transfer charges, and was told TNT put price up after the Paris attacks as they are shortly to be owned by Fedex and the guns used had been shipped via TNT before the attack. So Fedex do not want that sort of bad press. How true it is not sure.
My RFD quoted transfer cost via TNT would have been £80-100 I will go and collect the rifle if I decide to get one... Parcel Force will be the only carrier for firearms.

My understanding is TNT were already in discussions with the GTA regarding a price increase when the Paris shooting took place. Although having accounts with both TNT and Parcelforce and for the most use the latter so I cannot comment on the new firearms rates which they have not notified of us yet. What I can say is the HAZMAT shipping charge has now risen to GBP40.00 plus VAT plus fuel surcharge and there is a clause about destinations being within a set distance of the secure distribution centres. This has already been implemented so if you are ordering powder from Kranks, Hannams or similar allow fifty quid plus for shipping.

Parcelforce have also introduced a new system which means to ship a rifle with PF is going to cost around GBP20.00 however this also does not include and fuel surcharge or the monthly account management fees. Insurance costs extra however at least they offer this option if required. Add to this PF will not ship ammunition, powder or primers...

On the subject of Proof charges, to ship a single rifle for priority proof is going to cost a bare minimum of around GBP75.00 and that excludes paperwork, striping time, packaging if needed and inspect/clean and assemble on return. Nothing is cheap these days...

Even if a. I supplied the blank to the RFD, and b. he appointed me as his agent for the purpose of transporting the rifle to the proof house?

Remember, it's already legally owned by me............

So have the GTA entered into negotiations with any other courier service? If not, it could ring out the death knell for the firearms/shooting business, hence the sport in this country...

They are currently negotiating with Parcel Force, which means all the eggs in one basket, it just takes them to take the hump and there are no firearms transporters at reasonable price in the UK.

I've been thinking of starting my own transport business as I'm fed up with working for a employer. So one of the ideas was to add class 1 to my adr, get a rfd cert and anything else required and start a rfd to rfd/ owner to rfd / rfd to.owner business.
The rfd to owner will be possible if I am also an rfd.

But I havent got the money to invest in security and transport to make it viable.

Didn't someone start a dedicated firearms delivery business a few years ago?
