Home bluing results

There are many formulas on the market, which works best for you and why ?

I blued the revolvers below with Radocy Hot Rust. It does a good job, as good as factory, but it takes a long time. Each gun took about 8 hours for the bluing process alone. I estimate 12 - 15 hours for the preparation depending on pitting.

This is an average before picture. It's the out of the holster above, that one has new grips. The others are all originals.

You remove all the imperfections starting with a file, then a finer file then abrasive paper of varying grades until you can't get any finer. You do that to all the metal work, then you blue it according to the instructions given with the various types of bluing solution keeping it absolutely grease free at all times. I blued the revolvers above about eight times to get that result. It's a long and tedious process doing it by hand, but the end results are much better than doing it with chemical baths, belt sanders and buffing wheels.

I've tried most of the usual cold bluing solutions, and I've found Ballistol Klever to be the best in terms of finish and longevity. I don't think any diy home bluing solution will match a professional hot blue finish, but Klever is very good.

The secret really is in the metal preparation. The finer the surface polishing the deeper and more lustre the blue..

Really nice job on the MkVI.
In 1978 I was told by my grand dad that the secret to rifle accuracy is, a quality bullet, fired down a quality barrel..... How has that changed?

Guns dont kill people. Dads with pretty Daughters do...!

the main difference with the Radocy is that it is not a cold bluing solution, it's a hot bluing solution. You don't have to wait between passes, the entire gun can be blued in hours rather than a week.

I can't find fault with Blue Wonder, it's by far the easiest and quickest. A major plus is that you can easily touch up worn bluing, there no need to refinish the entire gun to get a good result............ It's nothing like a traditional blue, it's something completely different.

The barrel bands and butt plate below are painted with high temp engine paint then baked for 2 hours at 300 degrees. Everything else has been touched up with blue wonder in about an hour.

PS, Heat needs to be applied with a blow torch when using the blue wonder
