Lighting on indooor rifle ranges.

Our club is preparing a specification for the replacement and upgrading of the electrical lighting system on our indoor range. Is anyone aware of any publications or written guidance that will indicate what the appropriate standard should be other than just "good general lighting". If so I would be most obliged if you could point me in the general direction of such guidance.

The intention is to provide lighting of a reasonable standard for a club range and not really that which would be acceptable for an international UIT competition range. However if the difference is close then we would probably opt for the higher standard.

Hello, the spec as I recall is for the target end to be 1000 lux and firing point to be 300, with the middle so its safe to walk along about 150,

Thanks Rockhopper I wasn't really looking for the ISSF standard but its useful none the less. I'm just surprised at how little is said on the subject in the Joint Service Publications on range design.

Well we thought that if we are going to do it we may as well do it to some kind of recognised standard as there is nothing else in print anywhere that we could find.

Yeah, I'm not sure why you'd spec a system that wasn't to an international standard if you're going to the trouble of getting a new lighting system anyway.

Because it is a 100 yard range and we don't shoot UIT events the ranges of which only go up to 50M. The extra expense of lighting the other 40 odd metres to ISSF standards may be hard to justify.
The majority of the shooting activities on our range are gallery rifle (up to 50M) and sporting rifle use e.g. stalkers tests or zeroing etc. where the whole of the range is utilised.
