I was at the Home Affairs Committee enquiry into "Gun Control" earlier this week and Adrian Whiting - who is the ACPO lead on firearms licensing - was being pressed hard by the committee to say what age he considered is suitable for young people to have a firearm or shotgun certificate, as the current system was confusing.

And why not we all have to start somewhere,,,,and its in line with the age of criminal responsibility......whats your and the BASC stance on it Mike??

I thought Adrian Whiting was excellent at the hearing, well balanced answers and he refused to be backed into a corner and give stupid 'crowd pleasing' answers, no matter how much that McCabe fella tried :)

At last we have someone putting forward his own ideas and not the agenda of the labour party. Does anyone remember that obnoxious b@stard Brian Mackenzie, former President of the Police Superindendents Association..
He went out of his way to demand the total abolition of private gun ownership in this country, and made a consious effort to push for a ban whenever he had the chance.
It was incredible that the president of the ACPO, Jim Sharples (if I remember) along with Inspector Tolley of West Mercia police both argued that there should be no pistol ban, whilst Mackenzie seemed to have his own personal axe to grind. Needless to say the media completely ignored the former two men and concentrated fully on him.
It later transpired that he had been working in full collusion with the labour party who in turn rewarded him with a peerage under the title of Baron Mackenzie of Framwellgate OBE.

It is disgusting to be on the receiving end of political colusion at the best of times. But when a senior police officer acts directly for a political party against a section of society in return for a peerage, then it is even more offensive to those affected.

Let’s hope this man is listened to by those in power.

Barney 57 - the "BASC stance" is that getting young people into shooting is vital for our sport.

CERTIFICATION is another matter altogether - if we want to have a consistant minimum age to apply for certificates, then ten is fine by me - remembering that there will be supervision both before and after obtaining a certificate until the age at which the young person is safe and responsible enough to use a gun unsupervised. I agree that we have to remember that it is NOT young people with certificates who cause us problems - it's young(ish) people WITHOUT certificates, or older men with certificates.

This does seem to be window dressingt - "we've got to do something and this looks easy and after all, they're too young to vote." :evil:

Yes, I remember Jim Sharples and McKenzie - and I agree that the media concentrated on the banning issue and ignored Sir Jim, who was chair of ACPO firearms licensing then.

That award should just be treated as accepting a Bribe. NO police officer should ever expect such honours, that's why the force is so politicised these days. if they want an honour then quit and go into politics or whatever.

I concur. Another one rewarded for his work for NEW LIEBOUR. It's enough to make an honest person PUKE.
