I finally got around to getting my Krieger stainless barrelled RPA out and giving it a good cleaning using C2R. Oh how i wish i was getting it dirty again, but alas, it's going to have to wait until I'm back from the states.

The help I require is at the end of the blog post, I set about cleaning my action. Now I'm not much use at cleaning, quite obviously!

The action came out better than it was, however still not great.

I wondered if anyone had any tips on what to use to get in the action and give it a really good scrub/polishing.

I use quite a few different cleaning tools.

Manual Toothbrush.
Electric Toothbrush.
Plastic bottle cleaners ( 80p each at local store )
Large Brass bristled brush.
600 and 800 grit paper.
Cotton Buds.
Wooden toothpicks.
Mini flossing brushes ( excellent for BP nipples )

600/800 grit paper can be cut into small pieces and wrapped around cotton buds and other implements to reach everywhere or just folded into different shapes to get into difficult places.

But.... that rust on the receiver.... eeekkkk....

I think I'm getting the hang of it. For the most part I'm now covering what's in your guide. I think for the longest time I hadn't reallly had anyone to show me what to do and how to clean my rifle, I was of the opinion that "it'll do" and obviously that wasn't working for me, or my rifles.

Thanks for the shopping list, Mark! :)

I'll give the receiver another going over once I've got a few things off the list.

It's definitely better after the going over I have ti today, and those pictures on the blog are all before pictures, rather than after pictures, the surface rust on the outside of the action is gone, at least.

We'll see how much cleaner I can make it.

it's all a learning curve, and sometimes the things that should be easy turn out to be not so much if no-body shows you what to do!

I've found that surface rust can sometimes just be rubbed off using an oily rag and a bit of elbow grease.

With the grit paper, I've not used it on the outside of rifles just in case it takes the bluing with it.
But I have used it on my stainless ruger old army. Mainly on stubborn deposits inside the frame where it doesn't matter. But even then because the finish isn't that great to start with it doesn't show. In fact, it is actually getting better.

Only thing I do have trouble with is the cartridge chamber on my Mosin as with my eyes it is really hard to see how clean it is.

Maybe it is time to get some C2R.

Does anywhere in Cambridgeshire stock it I wonder?

For very light surface rust 0000 Wire wool lubricated with light oil such as 3 in 1 works very well.

Surely you have the underkeeper or even valet do menial tasks, ooman.

Badger hair brushes work really well.
