Apologies about this Ladies and Gents, I know importation has been to death, however, I don't think sec58 guns have been covered much.

I was thinking of bringing in a couple of obsolete calibre guns to add to the collection from the USA, all pre-1899 manufacture and all on the obsolete list.

I know regarding the EU no import license is required if the gun is made before 1899 and the US treats pre-1899 guns as not being firearms.

Does this mean they can be shipped door to door (obviously after paying customs and VAT around 22-25% all told I think of the price of gun and shipping) and not have to faff with any paperwork etc??

no not to your door if its comming from states you will have to pic up from po office with paper work

last one i did from states was detained at the coventry international hub by customs till i supplied paperwork to prove it was a antique, it was then release to my po office swansea, where i had to pic up in person and pay vat etc

At the moment you should not need any licence. VAT is chargeable at 5% for an antique. However do not be surprised if the item is detained until you can satisfy Border Force that it is an Antique exempt from Licensing control by Sect 58 (2) of the Firearms Act. One person I know emails a written statement to that effect with references to the legislation and obsolete calibres list to the seller and asks them to print it off and put it inside the package.
