Colonial Question - I don't understand this TV Licence thing - how is it possibly enforced?? Is it like guns - they're registered at point-of-sale or something? How would anyone know you're watching TV???

I've tried to find out what the fuss is about, but the few articles I read failed to mention what the problem was except he has an extreme agenda... What agenda and what's extreme about it?

The TV Licence is a historical anomaly. The BBC (British Broadcasting Commission) were the first providers of radio and TV in the UK until commercial stations arrived. The TV licence is levied on all households that have a TV capable of recieving the BBC signal. Saying you do not watch BBC programmes does not make you exempt.

What tom says, and you CAN go to jail for non payment. the BBC is an anchronism.

But it's not just a UK thing. Most countries actually either have a television license or just tax every household/put an extra charge on television, etc.

The UK's actually got the most lenient one as many countries will demand a television license if you own a television or even a radio. Some, like Israel, even have seperate radio licenses. The problem is enforcement of it.

As for how they know... from what I've seen they send threatening letters to people who don't pay and then pick some randomly to visit and demand payment. There's actually no real way for them to tell who's watching television live unless they look in through the windows.

FWIW - it's the British Broadcasting Corporation and it's not "capable" of receiving the signal - it's "watching / recording whilst it's broadcast". In this context broadcast does not include streamed from the internet if that's the only delivery method - ergo Youtube, Netflix et al are exempt.

Light green is no TV License. All others have some form of license or tax/payment. Only in the UK can you opt out if you own a TV, but don't use it. Edit: aside from Luxembourg which is commercial only. Edit/Edit: And even the light green is paid for by taxation, so frankly that counts as taking money from you as well.

That doesn't mean I agree with the TV License, especially seeing how the BBC puts a slant on its reporting (putting it mildly).

Ooops yes Corporation, must be my total contempt for the organisation that caused that.
