I have been thinking about this for a while in fact I have been debating about scoping probably all of my military rifles. I don't do iron sights any more its just to much like hard work with my old eyes. I had a range day to day I did OK with the mas36 out to a hundred yards on figure elevens and OK ish at 200 but its hard work. Any way when I got home I removed the rear sight and fitted a none gunsmith mount. I had to modify it slightly but it works and does not look out of place. Iv fitted a scope but there is not a lot of eye relief because of the short but stock. I'm thinking a compact scope may be the answer but I want it to look like it belongs on the rifle not some state of the art F class thing. I'm also thinking I may scope the No4 with a similar set up any suggestions.

If you are going to scope a Number 4 there are a number of ways to do it. Should it have been drilled then use the Parker Hale base plates that were used on the Enforcer Nos. 20 and 21 from memory. I also have a 'Kit' that was produced for mounting a No 32 which I must look out and photograph. But you're best bet would be the Fulton 'No Gunsmith Mount' not cheap but said to be very good. I have one but have not tried it yet. Also try a Parker Hale 5C Aperture sight as you may find it works well. With any luck someone can lensd you a rifle fitted weith one to try.

The No4 is all ready fitted with a parker hale aperture sight. I also have several none gunsmithing mounts for it so that's not a problem. Its a suitable scope that I am more interested in.

As you probably already know, the MAS36 was never scoped but the marksman FRF1 was based on its action. From the MAS 44 and onwards Mdls, the APX scope was used extensively . Some French shooters go the same way using "no gunsmith/no drilling" montage that clamp on the back-sight.

The only problem I see with scoping a MAS36 is getting a scope and mount ugly enough to compliment the rifle.

As a more constructive response Alpha, have you considered one of the slip on recoil pads for the butt stock? These can add some length of pull thus assisting with the short eye relief issue.

For mas36 simple pu scope from mosin-nagant will do nicely...?

We suggest the only reason for adding a scope to a MAS 36 would be to enable the enemy to be seen sooner and the white flag unfurled earlier...
