magnum primers

Hi I've worked up a good load for my rifle using normal cci primers but recently noticed I'm starting to get primers pushed out slightly.would I be better using magnum primers and if so would i need to change my powder amount.it's rl15 I'musing.thanks

What do you mean by "pushed out"? Do you mean they have backed out of the pocket, swelling at the edges (i.e. flattening) or cratering?

The purpose of magnum primers is to produce a hotter flame for a longer duration, which is useful for cartridges with a large case capacity. What calibre are you using? Does the load manual tell you to use normal primers or magnum? Are you shooting above maximum loads stated in the manual you used? How easy is it to seat primers? Perhaps the primer pocket has worn too much causing them to slide out during firing.

someone will come along and give you chapter and verse shortly, in the meantime, what do you mean "pushed out" ?are the pockets loose? are the primers flat? I wouldn't want to change primers at this stage before considering what else might be the cause, you would have to start from scratch if you went to magnum primers anyway, can't imagine the need? what calibre?

Sorry guys to clarify its 6.5x47.also the primers seat just fine.the pimers are still in but look as if they have slightly blowen back outwards,too much pressure I assume.the first batch I made were fine hence why I made up more but I noticed the primer problem with the last 10 or so.the cases are only on there 2nd use

Aha I know what you mean. I had issues with my 6.5x47 Lapua where the primers were getting pierced even though the loads were well below maximum. This was solved by small rifle magnum primers, which to be honest most people use (CCI 450 I use). I'm not sure if magnum primers would solve your issue or not. What bullet are you using, what weight and have you chrono'd your load? What barrel length are you running?

I was getting issues with Ramshot Big Game when I was approaching~2,900fps using a Lapua Scenar 123gr with 27" of barrel. After swapping out to magnum rifle primers and using RS50, I was able to achieve around 3,000fps before I noticed extractor marks on the brass (but no primer issues). My load is now balanced around 2,950fps with no primer issues and no extractor marks.

Sounds like your cases are worn out!
I have the same problem with 300 win mag cases - One reload and then the primer pockets are too loose. Problem with hot loads and soft(ish) brass I guess!

What brass were you using? Would I be right in guessing Federal or Winchester? I think these are known to be soft brass and exhibit loose primers quite soon (correct me if I'm wrong). As far as I'm aware 6.5x47 is only provided by Lapua and I've not known this brass to be soft.

Interestingly I've had this with .308 Federal brass before, new brass sorted it out. It looked similar to this.

Might be worth getting your head-space checked...just to rule it out.
