We've taken a liking to double rifles, oomans, but they are few and far between in this country and our budget doesn't run to an Anderson & Wheeler*. Can you clever people recommend any European interweb sites we should peruse for such commodities ? We fancy a 7.92x57, and would contemplate a drilling...

I'm keeping my eye out for a Baikal double rifle in .45-70 or .30-06. These seem reasonably affordable by double rifle standards, and I quite like my no-nonsense/ no-pretensions Baikal shotguns.

Not sure why I need it, but I've always wanted a double rifle.

Have a look on http://www.guntrader.co.uk - select 8x57 rather than 7.92x57 - there are usually quite a few, some at surprisingly low prices especially the Italian makes.

i had one in 45/70 pedersoli made kept it for a year found it rather heavy and unweildly

Badger beware these become very addictive very quickly, I have a Chapuis in .375" H&H, a Krieghoff in 7*65R and a .450/400 2 3/8" by Trulock and Harris. the European makes tend to be significantly cheaper than London or Birmingham named examples.

There are a few Blaser S2 in .30-06" and .30R Blaser floating around and with these you can adjust the point of impact yourself. Getting a double to regulate is a challenge, you'll need a copy of Graham Wright's shooting the British Double Rifle to understand the various foibles. They aren't cheap but well looked after can be a good investment, the following in .303" looks a good punt http://www.vintageguns.co.uk/bland-303

I shoot with the Express Rifle Association at Minsterly, we meet informally every 6-8 weeks and there are normally a selection of doubles and big bore bolt actions in use. If you are anywhere near minsterly then perhaps you could drop in and have a play the next time we meet? You'll either be cured or explaining to the better half the two barrels are better than one.

That Bland is lovely! A 303 double is something I've always fancied but at the moment £4000 is not available. As I'm from Edinburgh I keep my eyes open for Alex Henry stuff but again it's a bit pricey. I got lucky a few years ago with a nice Alex Henry 12 g hammer gun for £60 which I was advised to insure for £1200. A friend of mine has a lovely Henry in 450 that kicks like the proverbial mule.
