Which powder would you use ?

#1 Post by TJC »

Hi,

What powder would you recommend for a .308 with a 20" barrel firing the 178gr Amax in RWS brass if I want to remain supersonic to 800-yards ?

I've tried N140 and found pressure signs that that make a workable load supersonic out to a mere 500-yards so that's off the table. It produces unacceptable pressure signs at low velocity levels for me and has done that in 3 rifles. N550 worked well but are there alternative options or is a double-based powder your best advice ?

Ideally, I'd love to use Varget but I suppose it is best to use a powder that is in regular supply.

Any recommendations from the reloading gurus out there ?

Thx

Try one of the Reload Swiss powders perhaps RS60 would be best suited for that bullet which if my memory serves me right was Elcho17 (reloader17)
RS40 is somewhere near Varget and in plentiful supply, I use RS50 (was TR140) and RS52 for just about all my reloading at the moment (.223, .308, 7.62, 30-06 & 8mm) getting sub .5 MOA groups with 168g SMK and RS52 thro' my Steyr. Check out their website http://reload-swiss.com/en/reload_swiss ... index.phpe at around £70 a kilo you can't really go far wrong.

you should p*** those requirements with a velocity of 2500fps which should be reachable from your 20" barrel easily , I got 2600 easily with varget out of my 20" 308

have a look in your reloading manual and try the powder that your local shop stocks ?

You have a short barrel and heavier bullet

TR140/RS50 May be a touch slow

Look at in sequence
IMR4895
H4895
Varget
RS40
