Absolute tripe, providing you meet the usual criteria (as with any firearm/calibre for target shooting) of having somewhere to use it. "Standard" loading is comparable muzzle energy wise to a .30-06 according to Wiki so hardly anything exotic/worth writing home about.

I've got one for target shooting at Bisley. It's a Marlin 1895SBL. You'll need to load your own ammo though - there are no commercial flat ended lead rounds. Keep in mind the high muzzle energy. For instance I can't use with the guys who shoot gallery rifle at Bisley, it has to be used on one of the rifle ranges. Get one though, they are great fun.

We have two or three 45/70's in our club - A couple of Ruger No 1's and a Pedersoli rolling block. I shot the rolling block at 600 yards at Bisley a couple of weeks ago. Great fun.

I friend at my club shoots a Pedersoli Sharps in .45/70 for target - why should it be a problem?

I had a Ruger No 1 until somebody offered me silly money for it. Now I have a New England Firearms Handi Rifle which is SOOOO much fun. The only problem is that it keep shaking its' scope off with the recoil. The SMACK as the 405gr flat nose boolit hits the target board is fabulous. As Dromia would say PHWOAR!!!
