Ok so I'm thinking when I've got a 7.62x39 vz after the 223 one is gone and using the ali hanguard to mount a scout style scope. Actual scout scopes are kinda rare so I was wondering if something like a weaver pistol scope might be doable? Anyone want to talk me out of doing that and sticking to an actual scout scope at all please? the Weaver seems to have the MOA as people have shot Mosins and M1 Garands at 200 yards using it.

Not sure what scout scope you mean, as my scout rail has a dedicated long eye relief pistol scope fitted to it.

I think the "scout scope" thing may be a marketing idea to get rifle shooters to buy a dedicated scope (which is nothing more than a re-branded pistol scope)

Its long eye relief I need when the time comes, so at that rate a pistol scope seems the way to go.

Personally I'd be wary of mounting a scope on an aluminium handguard as you may run into problems with holding a zero once the handguard heats up.......then again you may not.Have a look on the link below.

Seems like a red dot might be better though, if mounted on the handguard. It doesn't mention it. I never seem to have luck with the side or dust cover mounts. It seems a popular thing to do in Canada with VZ's. So might give it a thought. It seems to work better than a polymer one at least.

Zahal seem to think it can work though and I'm game for giving it a go (most scope mounting systems have to come off for cleaning anyway and having used the scout mount from bc tactical that replaced the rear sight, I can say zero was retained but grouping obviously wandered what with the barrel heating). I'm keen to make it work but will go in cautiously.

"There are a variety of rail systems for the Vz58, but for mounting optics an aluminum hand-guard will hold zero much better than a polymer one. These hand-guard replacements can mount much more than just optics: they're the best method to put grips, lights and lasers onto a Vz rifle. The top rail can be a convenient space for red-dot sights. Here you don't have to deal with ejection or eye relief, so this is one of the easiest ways to get an optic up and running. Of course the draw back is that only an unmagnified red-dot with infinite eye-relief will work in an extreme forward position like this."


How can you not have much luck with a side mount???, a properly fitted side mount rail is probably the most solid mounting option of them all when it comes to Vz and AK type rifles and opens up a wide variety of optics including Russian offset scopes etc that would overcome the ejection problem I would have thought.It's a mounting system that is tried and tested by the Russians on everything from an AK to the RPG-7.I've hung 2.2kg of 1pn34 night vision scope off the side of my AKM with no problems.The side rail mount also means you can remove the optic/scope and it will hold it's zero every time, never had one go out of zero despite being removed and refitted many times.

I just had bad luck, can't explain it but I had bad luck. I've been put off a bit. Plus as crazy as it sounds I have this thing about scout mounting now, I love it.

Why can't you explain it?, if you have had bad luck with one it may have been a one-off .......you seem to be very secretive at times, or is it to add air of mystery?

And how can you have a "thing" about scout mounting (that sounds so wrong!) and love it if you haven't done it yet and know which scope you need???.I don't want to come across as a tw#t but do you know what you want?.

You're right it could be a one and like scout mounting comes from my experience using a red dot in that manner. I'll send a PM explaining what the problem was with the side mount.

Scout are IER, Intermediate Eye Relief, and pistol scopes are LER or EER, Long Eye Relief or Extended Eye Relief. For the Scout mounted telescopic sight, you would need an IER scope.
