Ok, you are at home, minding your own business when 15 of the boys in blue turn up to raid your cabinet. It turns out that a member of your family -that doesn't live with you - has been arrested with a shotgun without a licence, and they are now removing all your items to be forensically tested to see if they have been used in crimes
(this is the hypothetical situation. please do not argue about it, or discuss the whys and wherefors as to how it could happen differently. this is the scenario)
now, they have your guns, they do their tests, and they return everything to the owner. but the owner noted damage on all the guns, some of them even have exactly the same marks on them.
not only this, but they also managed to snap a rather old rifles bot, effectively scrapping the rifle.
the owner in not part of any organisations.
What can he do?

Personally first port of call would be the Local Police and Crimes Commissioner, if nothing is forthcoming in the form of compensation for damaged items then maybe the IPCC?

Household insurance - check if it has legal/contents cover?
Official complaint - seeking damages, etc.

Letter to Chief Constable, local MP, Home Secretary, further letters to Civil Rights authority, letter to Jean-Claude Junckers.
Stir the pot. Ask : Why did it need 15 plodules to come and intimidate a law abiding subject of HM ? Why the damage ? What the reasoning behind the fishing expedition ?

Basically that. If they want to make your life as difficult as possible and damage your property, make their life difficult as well. Don't damage their property though, that'll just end badly.

Your theoretical friend has kept documentation showing the condition of his guns before the police handled them? If so that's the first step. Next step is what everyone else says Brad.
