I find this all very confusing when trying to pick a scope for long range target application
What would be the best choice at the cheapest price
FFP or SFP
What type of reticle to choose.
All of this give one a big headache
Any suggestions

Depends on your budget. Go for optical clarity first, amount of adjustable elevation and whether you want to work in milrad or MOA.

I find FFP is very useful if you find you're changing magnification often. The reticles usually have MRAD/MOA hashes for holding over or rangefinding and with FFP the scale of the reticle matches the magnification, so if you're holding 2MRAD at 1,000m it will stay true for all magnifications. The downside to this is that if you're doing precision shooting then at higher magnifications the reticle could block out your target. FFP glass is more expensive than SFP.

SFP glasss is cheaper and the reticle is fixed. Good for precision work at long range with high magnification, but if the reticle has has mildots you will have to re-calculate holdover every time you change magnification.

In terms of reticle, it depends what you want out of it. Do you want a clean, non-busy reticle or would you like markings to use for windage/elevation holdover?

I have two Vortex Viper 6-24x50 FFP and use one on my .308 out to 1,000m. I find at £750 it is hard to beat in terms of value for money.

If you know the distances you are shooting I would say bung a SFP 50X Sightron on, they are readily available in the UK, keenly priced and they work.

For long range then SFP, FFP will block out too much of the target at long range.

I bought my first one in MRAD on a whim - Riflecraft only had one in MRAD and it would've been a few months before they got the MOA version in. I bought it and decided to give it a try and I found that I worked better in MRAD than I did with MOA. Ranging can be done in metres and is simple enough to do in your head. With MOA you'll have to play with distance in yards, target height in feet, clicks in inches etc...

MRAD
* 1 click = 1cm at 100m
*1 MRAD = 10cm per 100m (i.e. 1m at 1,000m)

MOA (click adjustment can vary between 1/4 and 1/8MOA)
* 1 MOA = 1.047" at 100y
* 1 MOA (one inch per hundred yard assumption) = 1" per 100 yards (i.e. 10" at 1,000 yards)

The assumption is that 1 MOA = 1.0" at 100y but in long range this rounding can cause errors. I know that my .308 elevation is between 11.0 and 12.0 MRAD at 1,000m depending on which ammo I'm using.

*MRAD - At this range 1 click (0.1MRAD) is shifting POA by 10cm (3.937") a time.
*MOA - At this range 1 click (assuming 1/8 MOA) is shifting POA by 3.63cm (1.431") a time.

You'll need to ask yourself if you need to be this precise or not. If you're doing shooting similar to myself, you'll probably find MRAD useful, but if you're doing precision shooting (F-class etc.) you may prefer the MOA system.
