Forever learning....this is interesting...bet you know this...

Volume differences before and after firing ...

308 Winchester - Commercial Case

55.7 gr - Lapua (fired)
54.5 gr - Lapua (unfired)
1.2 gr difference or 2.2% more volume after firing

The case is going to expand slightly when shot to take on the form of the chamber so volume is up and assuming you are only neck sizing the case volume will then decrease slightly.

The interesting part is comparing fired case volumes for say Lapua, Federal and Norma. The marginal changes in volume will give an indication of case thickness, this change is usually around the web.

So if you are using different makes of brass with different volumes it may mean you need to drop loads slightly from make to make. The reality for the everyday shooter is you may see the POI climb marginally.

For me when building 600m plinking (holiday) loads I just keep my brass in batches but do not modify the load as it is only at say 95%. As it is the brother in laws who will be firing this stuff it does not really matter.
