Hey guys,

I've spent a good few days googling around for this and haven't been able to find any one with experience of this.
I was reloading some shells hoping for light recoil small shot loads 7/8oz (24g) with about Lee Loadall II's 155 bushings worth of red dot. While this load generally performs satisfactorily and is a dream on the shoulder (with evidence of low pressure) it is tricky to find a wad that suits it.

Anyway, I knocked out some of these and found that the shot cup on the plastic mono-wad was not filled enough to provide a satisfactory fold crimp so I put in some plastic frangible discs over the shot.

I was wondering if anyone had done this before? The cartridges rattle as there is space around the shot but also crimp perfectly.

I'm operating at quite low pressures as evidenced by less than perfect burn and negligible felt recoil. Otherwise this is a fairly standard load.

I would not be insane to shoot these would I?

To make clear it's a fairly common low pressure load with a over shot card and fold crimp (I didn't have at the time but have since acquired a roll crimper)

It's normally more common to fill the inside of the wad with spacers -over powder cards, for example - of the next caliber down (20-ga in 12-ga wads) THEN add the lead shot

That is generally what I do, or add some offer buffer such as dust or ashes! But at the time this seemed like a good idea.

I use the plastic frangible discs when I load Lee slug then roll crimp the case so the disc is just in contact with the slug to stop it rattling round.
I use ready primed Fiocchi cases, dump powder in with my normal powder measure, place the slug in the wad and poke it down into the case with my finger, disc on top then roll crimp. Nothing too sophisticated!

Is that casted slugs of the Lee positive drive key type?

It certainly is. I use the 1oz Lee slug but found I couldn't roll crimp straight onto the slug as it didn't hold it in place. The plastic disc on top of the slug stops this.
I believe some of my fellow shooters star crimp on top of the Lee slug and this does the job. A roll crimp tool is about £40 so a bit cheaper than a star crimping machine.

As Jon says you can pop a card or as i do for my lee slug loads a slice of 20g fibre wad to bring the slug to the right height to crimp the case.

Okay guys, I would avoid using flour as a buffer. Unless you want a pyrotechnic going off in your face!
