I have a .410 Marlin L/A shotgun that I have conditioned for vermin and target shooting (with slugs).

I've kindly been given a handful of .444 Marlin cases and from what I've read they can be used as .410 brass cases.

However would loading them with a .410 slug then class them as .444 ammunition? (Which I'm not authorised to possess).

Seems a bit of a grey area.

I use .308 brass sized down to 7mm-08 - the case says one thing but in reality the cartridge is something else. Similar issue.

Provided that the case has been fire-formed to fit the .410 chamber, I can't see why it would be classed as a .444 loaded round. In my opinion it would be classed as a brass cased .410 cartridge rather than a .444 marlin. Through the eyes of the police, I am unsure because common sense doesn't seem to prevail on times... If you want to be pedantic, then I suppose you could file off the headstamp, which is what some people do when they case form (i.e. '30-06 to 8x57) so that they don't get the cases mixed up.

P.S. I hear that .303 british cases are good for this purpose too, and in the long run would probably be easier to source than .444 brass

I use 444 Marlin cases in a baikal 410 single barrel, had to reduce the rim thickness. The 444 is 0.063" and 410 are .035". The head stamp will be removed in the process.

this is interesting me , I'd like to be able to reload brass .410 ammo
