Does an american thread 5/8 - 24 have a British equivalent or is that the size of the mod I need to fit my Handi Rifle?

Cheers

5/8x24 is a standard muzzle break thread I believe. Brownels do thread adapters to cater for the fitting of moderators in different thread sizes.
If you just want a muzzle brake check out eBay there are lots on there with a 5/8x24 thread.

5/8" - 24 UNEF is a standard thread measurement. Roedale and OneLessCharlieoffer sound moderators in this thread sizing (http://www.onelesscharlie.co.uk/products.html).

If your Handi Rifle is a .30 cal then it should be 5/8x24, if it's 223 then it's 1/2x28 all UNEF

Wildcat Predator mods are handy for this as you can just change the bridge section and fit on whatever threads you have, I have one I use on two different 30cal rifles, one is M18x1 the other 5/8 UNF

I do have the .30 Handi rifle and can see online it's size, I also have a Savage Model 10 FP-FS in .223. I can't find the thread size anywhere and was tols from a local shop it's 5/8 buthas a completely different thread to the handi rifle.

If it was threaded in the US it would be 1/2x28 UNEF which is their standard for 223, if it was threaded here then it could be anything, if it's 5/8 diameter then it's probably UNF which is 18tpi not 24 which the US use.

I have 2 T3's one threaded at the factory which is M18x1 and one threaded here by the importer in 5/8 UNF, I do wish they'd standardise these things! :)

Yep, they are standardised, just to different standards.

Unified, Metric, both standards and both have fine and coarse equivalents (and extrafine etc).

I went down to my gunsmith and asked him which would be bet.

He measured the width of the barrel and we used the largest "standardised" thread which could be fit on it 18x1. This is so it has the most contact between components. Which should make for a stronger contact point against knocks and bumps.

If we standardised to the smallest, we'd all have weaker connections. and largest, all barrel thickness's differ...
