Scope mount damage to No5

Below is a picture of my No5 which I enjoy more and more every time I pull the trigger :D

However, as I have posted before, some moron drilled the receiver to fit a PH scope mount. I have removed this abomination and fitted a proper rear sight but I am left with the holes. Do I have the holes filled and damage the etched model/date markings or leave it as it is? Can the info be re-etched? Who can do this?

Also, I am not keen on the varnish finish, should I strip and put an oil finish on?

Finally, the butt isn't original, where can I source an original? EFD?

You can get the holes plugged and the receiver blacked again but the engraving............. :(

I agree - welding is too harsh, I seem to remember someone having a similar problem and getting the tapped holes filled with bolts of the same size silver soldered in and then flushed off. I cannot see how the markings can be very easily recovered though as a receiver is quite a hard lump of steel.

If you are interested I may have a No.5 bantam length (1/2" shorter than standard) butt, minus the butt plate in my secret stash of enfield parts.

I reckon a good TIG welder could do a lot to recover the holes - Mig would be too severe

Tig welding could recover the holes but you would then need to dress the metal back to its original contour and finnish. You could possibly mill it back but personally I would just leave it as it is.

Beautiful looking No5 you have there.Shame it was drilled, but i guess it suited the previous owner that way and it dont detract too much from the rifle.Instead of welding would a 2 part specialist resin like 'JB Weld' be worth thinking about? Its almost as strong as steel itself and if it were re-blued it might not be too noticable.Only thing would be the makers stamps.

With regards to wood finish-heres my No4 which was refinished in Tru-oil by previous owner. Its not as shiny in real life-the camera flash reflected. It has a sheen rather than a shine and can be knocked back to matt with 0000 wirewool.
