I recently travelled to Germany to shoot a practical pistol match (with hired guns). When I contacted my insurer, London Victoria, they would not cover target shooting or practical shooting. The only form of shooting they would cover was clay pigeon shooting. They acknowledged that a couple of years ago they had actually covered me for practical shooting, but have now refused to repeat such cover.

I want cover, not so much to insure my kit and guns as they are covered by my house and contents insurance, but to cover me for medical emergencies requiring expensive measures such as repatriation.

Can anyone give me the name of an insurance company which does offer travel insurance to include cover for the sports of target shooting and practical shooting?

The Post Office travel insurance provides comprehensive insurance including full medical cover for shooting activities.

BASC insurance covers holidays of up to 90 days (excluding North America) covering all shootings disciplines, although only on a 'recreational' basis. I believe the distinction is only there to exclude professional shooters, but might be worth clarifying; competitions are part of recreational target shooting. BASC specifically mention practical shooting within their target shooting information.

I'll second the post office cover.

Doesn't the NRA insurance cover you abroad? Or is it just for stuff they organise in the UK?

I suggest that you go read the terms of the NRA insurance to see what it does or does not cover.

Its irrelevant to me as i don't have it, but i suspect George does.

Thank-you to all who took the trouble to make a sensible reply to the query.

That nobody has come up with a named company, and that the otherwise excellent London Victoria do not now provide cover for sickness, medical costs, repatriation etc, when shooting (other than clay-pigeon shooting) abroad is significant.

The Post Office travel insurance seems good as the cover is defined in wide terms which do not exclude shooting.
