tumbling

#1 Post by Col »

Hi guys. today I did myself a favour to save myself time cleaning cases. I bought myself a Lyman tumbler,Following the instructions I placed a hundred .308 cases in the media and allowed it to run for about 2 hours, which left me with time to load a few .44 mag for my 1894 Marlin. The cases were all shining like new, except that the flash hole on every case was blocked with media,,which I had to push out,and so the time I gained was quickly lost. And so I thought, who better to ask for advice on better media than you lot. Any ideas please?

Ultrasonic cleaning, its the future :-)

No bits, no cleaning crap out holes and does a brilliant job on the insides. Just remember the sunglasses.

They all do that sir! What sort of media are you using?

Apparently stainless steel media is the way to go - quicker, cleaner and no picking it out of the primer pockets, and no I don’t use it yet :(

Thanks ovenpaa. I had an idea that the media may be graded finer, thus too small to block the flash hole,Oh well may as well get used to the media I use.Dont know what it is,it was in a bag inside the Lyman tumbler,so possibly something they use in the states.

Probably corncob then. Yes sadly I am yet to find a media that does not bung up the plug hole so to speak. I have an ultrasonic cleaner as well but seldom use it.

I tend to use an old worn out green scotch cloth for the outside of the necks and then tumble them maybe every 5th time.

I always tumble as soon as I get home from the range , then full length resize and decap , that way there arent any problems with blocked primer holes .

I tend to tumble and then de cap. I then clean the primer pockets using my case trimmer thingy

A skewer works - and is quite quick.

logically I would think to tumble the cases before decapping and sizing etc, but then others say to tumble after sizing etc,to remove the lube. problems ,,problems,, who would be a shooter!

If you only neck size, i.e. no lube issues, tumbling before de-capping is the way to go. imo
