"S5 1. para (aba) "any firearm which either has a barrel less than 30 centimetres
in length or is less than 60 centimetres in length overall, other
than an air weapon, small calibre pistol, a muzzle loading gun
or a firearm designed as signalling apparatus;"
Firstly, the bit you've quoted is S.5 of the Ammendment Act, which became law on the 1st October 1997. But, you will see that one of the exemptions is a "small calibre pistol". That's because there was a second part of the Act, Firearms (Amendment) (No. 2) Act 1997 which became law on the 1st of Feb 1998, banning them also.......
That said, you've highlighted "other than an air weapon" indicating that you don't reckon it would be S.5, yes?
However, air weapons over the proscribed ME limits of 12/6ft lbs, are not, with regards to the law, air weapons. They are firearms. Hence, a 12.5ft/lb air rifle is a S.1 firearm needing appropriate certification and an air pistol with a ME of 6.5ft/lbs would be a "short firearm" requiring S.5 authority.....
In 1978 I was told by my grand dad that the secret to rifle accuracy is, a quality bullet, fired down a quality barrel..... How has that changed?
Guns dont kill people. Dads with pretty Daughters do...!
Terrible wording in Firearms (Amendment) (No. 2) Act 1997... but I think I'm with you SimG...
"Prohibition of small-calibre pistols. In paragraph (aba) of section 5(1) of the Firearms Act 1968 (which describes a category of prohibited weapons consisting of all firearms less than 30 cm. in barrel length or 60 cm. in overall length, other than specified kinds of firearm) the words “a small-calibre pistol” shall cease to have effect."
So, by excluding small calibre pistols from the excemptions, you reckon that makes air pistols s5 if more than 6 ft lbs ME, as they are regarded as short firearms ?
