I'm not sure if your laws permit you to use the M14-type of rifles but, if you are, you may like to take a boo at a short review I just wrote about a pretty neat accessory - the Scout Handguard (SHG) from M14.ca which allows for the mounting of a LER scope or Red Dot.

There are straight pull M14's but not that many are about, might interest some of the M14 owners here though still.

Thanks for the info, I have just fitted a Springfield Armory third generation scope mount to my M14...otherwise I may have fitted one of these handguards.
