Would like to get into longer range shooting, advice needed

Hi Guys,
I have an open slot on my ticket for .308/7.62 which I would like to fill. At the moment I shoot out to a maximum of 600 yards with .223, but would like to try my hand at longer ranges. I think I have decided on a Remington 700 as the rifle to do this, partly because of the proven history of this rifle, and also because of it can be customised later down the line.
What I really would like to ask is if this is a wise decision? I am very much on a budget and the basic rifle is around £750 (I am looking to buy a new rifle). Customisation will come later when I can afford it.
Cheers,
Ben

I did just that, try and get a 26inch barrel to have best hope of 1000 yards but this is the evoloution of mine.
As I bought it SH already with the bolt handle replaced and a fixed mag extension
Screw cut and PES T-12 moderator fitted
AICS mag conversion and Kartsen cheekpiece
re-barelled with a 32 inch 1/10 twist truflite

Thanks for that. I'm looking at getting just the basic SPS Varmint model (26") as I intend to eventually replace the stock, trigger, etc.
Your rifle looks great by the way. :)

Thanks Ben, It actually looks different to the last pic again as it's got a different scope and Bipod. Have a word with Roger at South Yorkshire Shooting Supples (Rimfire Magic) he'll see you right
This was mine as it now looks in action

Funny you should say that, but I have been having email conversations with Roger and most likely will be buying from him.
