With a heavy bolt action can a blank ever be
made to feel, sound and recoil like a real round?

To a trained shooter who is given a loaded rifle,
could he be tricked by firing a blank and thinking
it was real?

Newtons 3rd law would suggest not but if you loaded it with crazy hot powder it might feel real to a beginner

Whilst the Sound of rifle fire can be simulated with blank ammunition, recoil cannot be simulated due to newtons 3rd law (every action has a equal and opposite reaction).
An experienced shooter would notice the difference.

As a re enactor/film extra I have come into contact with quite a few different batches of blank some good some bad
the worst is Egyptian army surplus 303, half of the time the primers are duds and this is the cause quite a few misfire drills. Not much better is Belgian FN which is very quiet. British Army Surplus was good when it was available, I noticed quite a lot was stamped 1956 Radway Green. the 1980's Greek contract blank (for cadets) was also excellent but is non existent these days.
A few years ago Kynoch produced some very powerful 303 blank but they no longer make it, Most now use Privi Partizan blanks but at 60p a shot it is quite expensive.
Russian army surplus 7.62x54 Blank is unbelievably powerful.

For my own needs I have had a rosette crimper made by CH4D in the USA so I have my own supply of 303 7.62 and 8x57 blank.

unless you start doing some MAJOR work to the rifle (internal muzzle restrictor, hydraulic recoil piston in the butt, etc.)

Exactly my thought... considering firing squads have been in the media re the lack of chemicals in the lovely US of A.
