Is it better to break in a new rifle barrel with a medium powder/velocity load for the barrel makers break in recommendations and then develop a load or develop a load whilst breaking in a new barrel. The barrel is a 26inch,8.5 twist,6.5x47 lapua

Go with breaking in to start, there's a million opinions on how to do this and then do your load development

I just use surplus ammo to break/run a barrel in. Never needed or worried about load development for a new barrel in an existing calibre.
Stands back and awaits all those who have contrary opinions. (Usually by those who don't understand what the process is about).

I wonder if anyone's ever done a test with 2 brand new barrels?I once read about a motorcycling magazine who tested 3 brand new engines, one to the manufacturer's spec, one by revving the t!ts off the bike and the other by riding it normally.
The end result was that revving the engine actually produced harder-wearing and longer lasting engine components.
I would be really interested to see a similar test with barrels.

Sorry to hijack :-)
