How much do your rifles weigh ?

#1 Post by LONG RANGE CAPT »

One consideration often taken into account when choosing a rifle is the weight of it.
But once it's had all it's go faster bits added :- Scope, moderator, rings/rails, bipods.....
How much does it then weight ?

And how much of a difference does it make to positional shooting in say, Practical Rifle, Safari hunting or general stalking ?

I'd be interested to know what other peoples rifle packages weight in at and weather it makes
that much difference when out with the gun ?

And what experiences people have found when out in field conditions ?

Kind Regards

Not as much as a GPMG, 400 rounds of link, spare barrels, bergan and fighting order that my sorry ar$e lugged around, over some of the most unforgiving terrain on God's little green and blue planet!!!!! :o

That said, my RPA which is only ever shot prone, with scope, bi-pod and loaded up, probably kicks in around 15lbs. My old Scout Rifle, loaded up with scope, sling and two mags, came in at just over 7lbs. And the Marlin .30-30, the way intended, just over 6.......

I seem to remember Jeff Cooper alluding, you choose the rifle for the intended "mission" and if you can use it as such, it's light enough. If you can't use it the way intended, or move swiftly and comfortably to different shooting positions, it's too heavy, so choose another platform..... (paraphrased)
In 1978 I was told by my grand dad that the secret to rifle accuracy is, a quality bullet, fired down a quality barrel..... How has that changed?

Hmm... well my 7mm scoped weighs exactly 10kgs according to my scales, the Vikings 22C is around 9kgs scoped without a bipod, my AI is 8.1kgs scoped, the 4(T) is around 4.1kgs and the S&L in 6.5x55 will be around 5kgs ready to go.

The Pre45 .303 stuff is all going to be around the 3.5kg mark at a guess.

As far as I am concerned only one is a true positional rifle and that will be the S&L and that is a week or two away.

Probably not a huge amount of help :)
