A simple poll to see what the forum preferences are for the general appearance of rifles. This is about general appearance as opposed to function and accuracy.

Can't really answer it as it depends on the gun as to what i accept for looks.
Shiny and/or new is a real turn off for me

I've got a couple in my cabinet that bear the scars of 120 years of hard graft and I love the way they look...
But I've got a couple if modern boomblasterchuckabulletamile which are nice and shiny and lovely an I love the way they look...

It really depends on the type if they are Milsurps I expect their appearance to reflect their age.
The Steyr SSG P1 I keep it tidy but its been around a while Im not fussed if it gets a bit grimy. The AIA I'm not bothered what it looks like as long as it shoots its my latest fad when I get bored with it Ill clean it put the bits back on Iv taken off and sell it. My custom built 6.5x55 with the lovely stock has to be shiny shiny. The mas36 is cleaned as soon as I get home the stock is oiled and the metal work then its wrapped up in a soft cloth and put in its own special place in the cabinet the same goes for the .303 jobbies.. The trapper I can not remember the last time I cleaned it and that goes for the .22 as well. I cant remember what else is in the cabinets what ever they have not been out for a while.

It all depends on what rifle it is.
If I buy a new one then I try to keep it in the best condition I can while using it, if it's a milsurp from WW1/2 that has marks from being used during that period, then that adds to it's history so try to keep it at that level without doing any more damage, again using it whenever possible.

Well used and looked after is fine, but well used and still near mint is better-
This one was made in the mid-1820s---still has the cut-out for a flintlock pan, but it is not a conversion. I shot it for 12 years before i asked myself if I was being sensible---
