Why do we need a slot for a moderator?

This is a result of something I saw on another forum. Somebody was asking why we need to put moderators on the FAC, and for the life of me I can't think of a sensible answer.

It can't be anything to do with crime or crime prevention, because if criminals can find illegal guns then surely they can also find moderators.

So, does anybody know why we need to put mods/suppressors/silencers on the FAC? 5mith

Because it's the sort of restriction that has a "feel good" factor to politicians and the public.

Because they are classed as firearms in their own right, as are other pressure bearing items like as bolts, rifled barrels, etc and in some counties so are receivers/parts even if they aren't pressure bearing or have a serial number on them 8-) .

I thought it would be obvious?
It's so you can't fit one on the end of your illegally held S&W Model 19 .357 magnum revolver ( other revolvers are available - just pop round your local boozer and ask around) and run around silently shooting lots of innocent criminals and drug dealers - you know like in the movies " phutt! phutt!"
(It makes it so silent you can only type it in lower case)

My local department said they wanted them off ticket for FAC holders in their area, but were told they couldn't due to EU rules.

Cannot be anything to do with the Eu seeing as they are prohibited in many countries. Firearms laws are not subject to Eu control.

I'd say it's more likely a not to America, where even the most gun-friendly of states are scared of "Silencers" (Yeah, I know).
It's just more typical UK BS with no sound reasoning behind the notion, probably just an overheard conversation or some shooter flapping his gums when he should have stayed quiet ;)

The most successful silenced revolvers were probably the Nagant M1895 and the Russian OTs-38 integrally silenced revolver, the latter used special silenced ammunition and was indeed virtually silent. The difficulty in silencing or suppressing a revolver lies in the gap between the cylinder and the barrel.

Your question was "Why do we need to put sound moderators on an FAC?" Which i answered.

Your question should have been "Why are sound moderators classed as firearms/licensed?"
