Can't see our NRA doing anything useful any time soon!

I finally understand why people are so eager to claim our NRA is different to the NRA in the US.
It's because referring to the two in similar tones would be insulting to the NRAUS!

As a boy, I was once taken to a football match (I never repeated the experience). Listening to all the shouts of advice, encouragement and abuse from the spectators, it occurred to me that the clubs were fielding the wrong team---every single one of those spectators appeared to be able to play football better than those on the pitch.
In a way the NRA is like that---whatever they do, some spectators will aprove and some won't. In another way, the NRA is different: you see, every single one of those football fans had payed for the privelige of criticising the teams. Most of the abuse that we have here on this site comes from people who are not NRA mambers. Have you payed your membership fees?
The USA is a much bigger country than ours and the great majority of shooters are members of their NRA. As a result, it can afford the lawers, researchers and lobbyists and so have some influence on legislation.

It seems BASC does that instead of the NRA?

Fred I get where you are coming from and to a degree I agree with you mate. As you say the United States is far bigger than the United Kingdom however regardless of size and membership numbers the one thing that helps enable the US NRA to do what it does is unity among sportsmen in this country. As you state in your post the majority of firearm owners here are members of the NRA, the NRA supports all forms of shooting regardless of the tool of choice, it supports hunting, conservation as well as a host of other things firearms related.
I believe in the UK however it is more fragmented with different organisations supporting different forms of shooting and types of hunting. I also believe that UK sportsmen, under one banner, are more than capable of mounting a defence against unfair/kneejerk legislation handed down by the powers that be. In unity comes strength and a louder voice, that is unless one believes that's it's best to stay under the radar and not rock the boat in which case the powers that be will do what they want when they want.
With regards to this story, I read yesterday that the US NRA is to take BATF to court to have this decision overturned.
