Which Chronograph ?

#1 Post by DOGGER2UK »

I need to replace my old and faithful chronograph which recently died from a nasty case of lead poisoning.

I have used a Magneto speed V1 which attaches to the barrel of the rifle ( or suppressor) and has the read out device next to you on the firing point, no need to stop other people shooting while you collect your results. However it is difficult or impossible to attach to older rifles with wood or bayonet fixings near the muzzle.

I am also thinking about the SuperChrono from Steinert but have had no hands on experience of it. One drawback with this type of chrono is its inability to read subsonic loads. I will also have to go forward of the firing line to collect results.

I think both of these chrono’s are better than my old Light type chrono with vanes etc and the results often affected by cloudy or bright conditions on the day.

What advice can you offer, particularly re the SuperChrono?

I'm holding out waiting for one of these:

Pros:
Doesn't need to go down range, deals with subsonics

Cons:
Doesn't ship to UK or anywhere ...yet (I'll have it forwarded when it's out)
Not gonna be cheap

Cool, didn't know about the Skan, althought velocity wise it's ok it's specifically for air rifles and the max grain is 49.9 - meaning much above 223 is out of the question even if you were to use it for a firearm.

The mk10 Skan will do firearms but it's nearly a grand - ouch!

I have owned four chronographs over the years and used several more - I now have a Magnetospeed V3 and can't fault it. It's accurate, east to use, very compacy and not subect to any of the problems encourtered by so many types of chron, i.e. light/shadow, wind etc., and is amazingly compact.

At present I've got what I consider the ideal chorongraph at a good price. I've upgraded mine by adding the manufacturer's soft case, and I'm currently awaiting their iOS )boing/iPad) connection cable and compatible app.

I have a Magnetospeed too and would never go back to a Shooting Chrony, but they won't fit on older rifles (e.g. SMLE) as the OP pointed out.

You could look at a BMC-19:

You've just sold this to me... I can't see it listed on their site. Are they out of stock or is it still in development?

I've toyed with the Magneto speed as they seem to have sorted the sensitivity issues of the earlier models however the lack of flexibility in what rifles it will mount on is the main drawback for me as I don't shoot many rifles with just a plain barrel sticking out.

I currently use a Steinert and a PACT, the ease of set up with the Steinert is excellent but the reading being down range on the chrono is its drawback as you need to go down range to reset and sometimes read it so the PACT still gets the bulk of the work.

The PVM is and excellent bit of kit as I have had the pleasure of using one but my ballistic needs are not that great that £750 + is worth spending on a chrono.

There is no universal chrono out there the ticks all my boxes, the Magnetospeed comes close and I'd spring for one of them if they made a more flexible mounting system for it to fit full stocked, bayonet lugged, cleaning/clearing rod, big foresight fitted rifles.

If the Steinert had a firing point read out and reset then it would be a very strong second but with these two major limitations it is the old PACT with the skyscreens that still gets the bulk of the work, the CED is also an excellent piece of kit and our club has the infra red set up for indoors and it works very well.

Do you have the v3? It looks like that has a lot of fixing options, or is there another reason why it may not fit an SMLE?
