Its quite popular in the States, particularly with AKs, to create the BFPU (BattleField PickUp) look by adding "wear" marks to the barrel and receiver etc usually with a scotchbrite pad and adding a beat up stock and handguards etc.Its also done to get an aged "Khyber Pass" look as well.
If it is done correctly it can look very effective and and is often done if an old parts kit is built on a brand new US made receiver.

Here's an RPK that has been built from a parts kit onto a new receiver and the receiver has then been "worn" to match the original parts.

I weathered and beat the s*** out of my AKM when I bought it. My gun, my money, my rules.

"BattleWorn" they call it. It's big in the states because over there some gun owners are just people who have moved on from Call of Duty because it's easy to buy the real thing, and want their firearm to look like it's seen dirt time.

It ain't that big and if it is it's only amongst the walts. Reading the comments below the article gives a fair impression of what folks think of this idea. Hell I buy a rifle I want to keep it looking good and not like I bought it from Century Arms.
