Downloaded ammunition

Not got a full story here but maybe someone has.

Just got wind that the NSRA are saying that 'insurance' may be invalidated if shooters are using 'downloaded' ammunition on their indoor range.

Anybody have the full story?

It is true, we had this "discussion" with them during the summer, we were also told that their insurance only covers people shooting disciplines recognised by a governing body, so no casual shooting is covered or things like UKBR benchrest, if you aren't shooting practices of a recognised competition at the correct targets then your insurance is invalid, just a jobsworth really.

So shooting 44 magnum in a gallery rifle course of fire is fine as it is recognised by a governing body, but it must be full power ammunition as reduced handloads aren't covered. Full stoke factory ammunition could well be over the range certificate so still not covered. NSRA are a complete waste of space and are only interested in their smallbore target shooting competitions/disciplines.

I was told all this in a telephone conversation with an NSRA employee as well as a discussion with their insurers.

I reported on it here at the time.

We moved to the NRA who are happy to cover any form of legal target shooting i.e shooting at targets.

Handloaded ammunition is full bore so outwith their purview anyway.

Yep, same as my club, we have notices around warning us. I'm pretty sure were NRA affiliated too though, I'll have to check

How does it stand having two insurance policies for your club?

I'd assume the NSRA policy would cover small-bore, NRA full?
I'm assuming affiliation comes with insurance?

In line with most other insurances' if you have two policies covering the same then one would negate the other and you may well find that in if you actually had to make a claim, you may find that you are actually uninsured. Best to check with an insurance professional.
My club has a professional from the insurance industry (not a high street broker but from the City and is involved in high risk asset insurance) on the committee and his advice has been invaluable. You only insure once so choose carefully. Bannermen Rendal who the NRA use are to be recommended.

I can't say I've ever read a policy that says you're not insured if you have another policy... Pretty sure that wouldn't be legal.
You never know though.

As I said, speak to an insurance professional, that does not mean a high street broker.
