Other than Simplyammo or Ammo-zone does anyone know of other 54r stockists?.Don't mind Russian, Hungarian etc so whats out there?.

Buy some Lapua and PPU and recycle your brass.....the last lot from you was fab clapclap

Is the spec of the milsurp that's currently available all the same? I know some of it looks different, some it lacquered, some isn't, some has a brand name stamped on the side etc. I was told that some of it is high pressure and I've seen people struggling to open bolts on Nagants before now. Just wondered.

No, ooman, it's not all the same, in fact there are over 38 different types ! Standard ball ammo comes in two different bullet weight, one for rifles and one for machine guns, and then of course there are variants for tracer, armour piercing and so on. Spread those across several Russian factories and over a dozen former WarPac producers and the variety soon grows.

The rounds that cause the sticky bolts are probably machine gun ammo that has been broken down from belts. It has a little more poke, but the MN action is strong enough to take it. It was standard Soviet practice to use MG ammo in rifles if necessary

What meles says, you might get a stuck bolt but I don't think you'll have a problem with the action exploded. I saw a video by iraqveteran888 where they handloaded a 7.62x54R with Bullseye pistol powder all the way to the top of the case and crammed a bullet in. It shot sure enough but the action remained intact, although not even a sledgehammer opened the bolt iirc.

The vast majority of 54r milsurp available in the UK at present is 1977 dated 150gr steel-cored with copper-washed cases with a "188" headstamp (Novosibirsk factory number), that's because most dealers get it from the same suppliers and its much the same story with 7.62x39 as well .Some 54r has "KolArms" on the case in black lettering, KolArms are a wholesale ammunition and firearms supplier in Slovakia and currently sell 54r at €185 a 1000, and is standard Russian milsurp.
From my experience Hungarian 148gr LPS (silver tipped) is very good milsurp and I'd love to find 5-600 rounds of it as the Dragunov loves it and will easily cloverleaf 3 rounds at 100m, I found 70 rounds of it and it was superb but I can't find any more at the moment.
The "Holy Grail" of 54r ammo are the 7n1 and the later 7n14 sniper rounds, easily identified when packaged by the Russian word for sniper all over the wrapping paper (but visually identical to the standard round, biggest giveaway is a "97" headstamp for 1997 which is pretty late for milsurp), but the problem is Russia has never been keen on selling its sniper ammo and the 7n14 is armour-piercing anyway.Some 7n1 was available at one time but came from stocks captured in the Middle East not from Russia.
