Hello, just a quick one. I have a friend who's father died a while back and he has inherited quite a number of different rifles and shotguns, some of which are worth quite a significant sum. Among them are a couple of Mauser target rifles one of which is apparently very, very tidy and is Nazi marked he tells me.

I cant remember if its the 8x57 or .308 one. But a local shop have told him its worth nothing, £200 max. I just wanted to ask here as I know nothing about 'old school' target rifles! I had it in my mind that Nazi marked guns were worth a bit more but perhaps that is only in original format. He said it is an original target rifle and was built as that but I'd assume if its got Nazi markings its probably been converted or build using left over bits?

Anyway I couldn't think of a better place to ask! I said I'd try and find out for him as I dont want to see him ripped off. I'll try and get some pics when I can.

Any info would be appreciated!

When you say "Nazi marked target rifle" is this a period target rifle built in Germany, or purely a target rifle built on a Nazi marked K98 action? If it's the latter, I suggest that the local gun shop is being fairly accurate.

Some photos might help. Bear in mind many British TR shooters used Mauser-actioned rifles in the period from WW2 until the introduction of modern TR actions such as the Swing and Paramount etc.

I have yet to see it but will take some pics and post them here when I do. He said it was built as such from new but I assumed, maybe wrongly, that it was just a target rifle built on a '98 action. His father saw action in WW2 and Korea and finished up a Colonel. Apparently he has quite a collection of bits and pieces including german daggers which I'd imagine are possibly worth something themselves.

"Nazi K98" ?? Does it mean that the rifle was a fully-fledged, card carrier member of the NSDAP ??Accepting the logic of this k98 being a true "Nazi", you will find reception marks for one of the para-military sections of the NSDAP, probably on the stock . One of those with matching #, decent condition ? GBP 1,5 ? 2K ? or more depending on the branch it was issued to.

We are just speculating without photographs.

At least with photographs the speculation could be narrowed.

Pictures of the actual rifle and any barrel/action stampings would go a long way towards the identification/valuation process.
