Real world info on bullet type, powder and maximum ranges?

No experience personally, but I believe this is used in 1000 yard benchrest (among other calibers) so should reach that distance, obviously rifle/load depending.

Look at the accurateshooter.com website and forums. This was originally called 6mmBR.com before it broadened its appeal to all precision cartridges and shooting, and has a great deal of loads data and applications in its cartridges pages as well as in its vast numbers of forum postings.

Yes, the 6BR in its 6mm BR Norma (long-throat, 1-8 inch twist barrel) form shoots very well to 1,000 yards when used with the heavier (105-108gn) match bullets. Lapua brass is readily available, strong, and very consistent - bit pricey, but it lasts a long time.

The 'standard' match load has long been Lapua brass, CCI-450 SRM primer, high 20s gn H. VarGet (charge weight dependent on throating and barrel), 105gn Berger VLD or similar seated into the rifling for ~2,800 fps MV from a 28-inch barrel. With VarGet shortages, a lot of UK 6BR shooters have found that Viht N150 gives very good results with 105s in the cartridge. There are others that work too, but this is one of these cartridge that see one or two powders give outstanding velocity and accuracy combined.

Jim Marsden wins UK Benchrest Association 1,000-yard competition with ‘straight-out-of-the-box’ Savage Model 12

An out-of-the-box Savage Model 12 long-range precision rifle in 6BR Norma calibre proved its supreme accuracy when competitor Jim Marsden shot a string of four single figure groups at a recent official UK Benchrest Association 1,000 yard competition held at Diggle Ranges in Manchester.

The smallest group Cheshire-based Jim shot measured a phenomenal 5.669 inches while his other three groups measured 9.212 inches, 8.07 inches and 9.173 inches. These are exceptional 1,000 yard groups but even more remarkable for a factory-built rifle such as the Savage Model 12 LRPV. The results meant that Jim, who was shooting with home loaded target ammunition, went on to win the Factory Sporter Class of the competition.

The Savage Model 12 LRPV, which is distributed in the UK by Edgar Brothers, features Savage Arms’ renowned Target AccuTrigger, a single-shot left porting magazine, and a spring-loaded lever bolt release. As well as 6BR Norma, the Savage Model 12 is also available in .223 Rem, .204 Ruger and .22-250 Rem calibres.

The 6mmBR is a superb little cartridge capable of great accuracy even at extreme ranges, as Laurie's post above clearly shows.

BUT, benchrest is not F Class - that tiny 6mm bullet traveling at less than 3000fps will well and truly get its little ass kicked at extreme ranges in anything but calm conditions.

Out to 600 yds however, it's a viable cartridge in any discipline.

+ 1...........6BR is loads of fun. I've shot mine at 1000yds, and on a calm day, it certainly won't disappoint.

Using SMK107's, and Elcho 17 powder, I'm getting an MV around 3000 fps. (Lapua brass, Rem 7.5 primers, and a 760mm 8 twist barrel throated for the SMK's)

According to "Point Mass Ballistics Solver" the 107 grain bullet at an MV of 3000 fps will be supersonic at 1000yds.

One of the most common places to find 6BR is in ISSF 300m, where it has ruled the roost for a few decades after it took over from .30 cals which were felt to limit performance in a 60 shot or 3 x 40 shot match due to recoil (I'm a sucker for punishment, so I persist with .30s). 6BR is now slowly being displaced by the 6XC for the top UK shooters and in the rest of Europe.

That SAVAGE 12 LRPV looks to be good value for money and actually available.
