LMT Accuracy

I am starting to think about replacing my Parker Hale T4 with a more modern 308/7.62x51.
For my sins I am rather drawn to the AR style of rifle.

The intended use for said rifle would be target shooting at ranges between 300 and 1400 yards.

I realise that for the longer distances 338 would be the better option, but for versatility and expense I thought I would stay with the 308/7.62. The Rifles I have considered span quite a large price range.

I very much like the look of the LMT (L129A1) but a friend of mine says the barrel would not perform as well as heavy barrelled actions, therefore the long range accuracy would suffer to a degree.

Has anyone in th UK shot one of the side-pull variants of this rifle at ranges of 1000yds or greater and if so, could they comment on its performance please.

All the best
Bob

I can't speak for the rifle you mentioned, but with a 16" barrel, a .308 projectile will go transonic well before it gets to 1000 yards, which would say the long range accuracy would suffer. How much, I have no idea...

Hi TG,
Yes, I hear what you say, I was thinking of a 20" barrel but I doubt that would make much difference.

One option I am considering is the new AI offering with a 24" barrel.

An AI with a 24" barrel chambered in 7,62x51/.308 will get to 1000 yards without issues.

Thanks Ovenpaa, I thought/hoped it would. I had hoped the LMT Would too.

Have shot one at 600 with GGG, really enjoyed using it but I wouldn't expect much at the distances you are thinking about......

If you're an NRA member you can hire the one they have for about £17 ish for a morning and try it out before deciding bangbang

Dannywayoflife seems to be doing OK with a ridiculously short barrel in his DTA

Of course, you could always look at 6.5x55 Swe as an option, and Dromia might even suggest the Ackley Improved version thereof...
