I'm just about to buy a Pedersoli sharps 45/70 rifle , I don't want to go down the black Powder route at the moment ( no permit) , so looking for a powder that fills the case as much as possible, and a bullet weight suitable for working up a load I can shoot long range (Barton road)
Any advice would be greatly appreciated,

Paul Matthews books on the 45-70 are worth a read.

I had real trouble getting any sort of accuracy with my Pedersoli Sharps Cavalry Carbine. Turns out it does not like smokeless propellants at all. Can't group on a pie plate @ 100 m with smokeless. I switched to 2 Pyrodex pellets with an Ox-Yoke Wonder Wad to take up the extra space. Performance-wise this closely approximates the lighter 'carbine' loading of the .45-70 and will give me groups under 3 inches at 100m.
