Now I could be very wrong here but for a firearm the US (Assuming it is not a restricted item) they would need an export licence however you should not need an import licence as a private individual, the only people who take an interest are HMRC at our end and assuming it is a firearm, and you have the necessary variation HMRC can actually sign it onto your FAC so an RFD need not be involved (According to my FEO)

I should have some notes on this as work as I have been through the same just a couple of weeks ago, but basically:
You need to find out what the commodity code is for a shotgun, this is a ten digit number and can be found
The Tariff Classification Service (01702 366077) can help you with this commodity code, there is also a website that deals with it, once you have the commodity code ring HMRC imports, give them the code and they will tell you if an import licence is needed. write a letter detailing your name, address what you want to import and confirming it does not need an import licence, sign it, scan it and mail it to the US, they will then apply for the export licence and submit your letter at the same time. The export licence should be ready in a week or two.
Please do check this though and good luck
